In El Salvador, the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) was fighting a national liberation war against the US backed military government. The US provided billions of dollars in equipment and training to the military, as well as military officers to both train and take part in government’s decision making. US trained government death squads terrorized and murdered civilians, including prominent Catholic clergy, and recruited child soldiers at gunpoint.

The US supplied the airplanes and trained the pilots that dropped 500 and 750 pound antipersonnel, napalm, and white phosphorus bombs on the civilian population in the hope of depriving the FMLN of their non-combatant supporters. The U.S. employed a strategy of coercion and intimidation it had perfected in the Viet Nam War.
