During the 1980s the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) of El Salvador led a national liberation war to overthrow a series of US-backed governments. The US provided billions of dollars in equipment and training to the Salvadoran military, which formed death squads that terrorized and murdered thousands of civilians. In Nicaragua, the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), had ousted the Somoza dictator government in 1979 and was governing Nicaragua. In 1981, the Reagan Administration backed a rightist collection of counter-revolutionary groups, providing them funding, equipment, and training through the CIA to overthrow the Sandinista government. This was known as the Contra War which terrorized the people of Nicaragua for years. A broad-based solidarity movement in the U.S. emerged to oppose the U.S. wars in Central America.
