Puerto Rico is a US colony. Puerto Rico is an intervened nation, a Latin American country with its own culture, language and history. It was established as a nation under the Spanish rule in 1868. It fought fiercely to be free of Spanish and later US domination. But this is not what we have learned in US schools. We have been taught that Puerto Rico is a tiny island that is completely dependent on the US and that it is a drain on US resources.
