During the 1980s the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) of El Salvador led a national liberation war to overthrow a series of US-backed governments. The US provided billions of dollars in equipment and training to the Salvadoran military, which formed death squads that terrorized and murdered thousands of civilians. The FMLN was created on October 10th 1980, as the paramilitary arm of the Democratic Revolutionary Front (Frente Democrático Revolucionario; FDR) a coalition of partisan groups opposed to the US backed government.
