On October 30, 1950, the Nationalist Party led an anti-colonial insurrection in Puerto Rico to protest colonial occupation and the designation of Puerto Rico as a free-associated state. The main fighting. led by Blanca Canales, took place in Jayuya. As a result, October 30th is known as the Jayuya Rebellion or the Grito de Jayuya. Although not well known, the US bombed and destroyed the town of Jayuya during the uprising. In the aftermath of the rebellion, hundreds, including Pedro Albizu Campos, President of the Nationalist Party of Puerto Rico, were arrested, and imprisoned for many years.
