May 15, 1948 marked the establishment of the state of Israel. This date is referred to by Palestinians as the Nakba, or catastrophe, in reference to the ethnic cleansing of Palestine and the loss of the Palestinian homeland. Over 750,000 Palestinians were forced from their homes and land. Israel is an apartheid state, similar to the white settler regime that ruled South Africa. Israel continues its illegal occupation of the West Bank and Gaza in spite of worldwide condemnation. Palestinians in the occupied territories and within Israel are under constant attack, denied their basic human rights. The Palestinian struggle is rarely supported by US liberals, evidenced by the slogan “Progressive except for Palestine.” This t-shirt was part of the movement to bring Palestine to activist’ consciousness.
