In the early- and mid-1980s, white supremacist organizations were recruiting all over the country, including California and the San Francisco Bay Area. This was one of several actions that forcefully defeated the Klan here. This attack was instigated by a Klan organization from Modesto. A counter demonstration of several hundred people gathered south of Market, causing the police to pull the Klan caravan over on the Bay Bridge and escort them away for their own protection.
